Understanding Your Menstrual Cycle

The Four Phases of Your Cycle

Your menstrual cycle consists of four distinct phases:

  1. Menstrual Phase (Days 1-5): Your period occurs as the uterine lining sheds
  2. Follicular Phase (Days 6-14): Eggs mature in follicles in your ovaries
  3. Ovulation (Day 14-16): An egg is released from the ovary
  4. Luteal Phase (Days 15-28): The uterine lining thickens in preparation for pregnancy

Tracking Your Fertility

Understanding your fertile window can help with both conception and contraception:

  • The fertile window typically includes the 5 days before ovulation and the day of ovulation
  • Sperm can survive in the female reproductive tract for up to 5 days
  • The egg is viable for about 12-24 hours after ovulation
  • Basal body temperature and cervical mucus changes can help identify ovulation

Common Cycle Variations

Variation Description When to See a Doctor
Irregular cycles Varying more than 7-9 days between cycles If persistent for several months
Heavy bleeding Soaking through a pad/tampon every 1-2 hours If affecting daily life or causing anemia
Missed periods No period for 3+ months (not pregnant) After 3 missed cycles
Severe cramps Pain that prevents normal activities If over-the-counter meds don't help

Did You Know? The average menstrual cycle is 28 days, but normal cycles can range from 21 to 35 days in adults. Teen cycles are often longer (21-45 days) and may take several years to regulate after menarche (first period).

5 Tips for Cycle Tracking

  1. Track consistently: Use an app or calendar to record start/end dates
  2. Note symptoms: Record physical and emotional changes throughout your cycle
  3. Understand patterns: Look for trends over 3-6 months
  4. Consider basal temp: Tracking morning temperature can confirm ovulation
  5. Check cervical mucus: Changes in consistency indicate different cycle phases
